We bought the puzzle to take with us on a family getaway.
My husband, his mother, two sisters and spouses, a brother and spouse, two nieces and two nephews trundled off to Wisconsin to spend several days eating, talking and playing games.
The puzzle, a Peter Maxish scene featuring a large bird-like creature with apples for feathers, was one of two puzzles we worked on over the four days we spent at our rented luxury home. Just about everyone took a turn at the table, but my niece Eliza and I were by far the most obsessed. One morning I started on the puzzle even before the coffee was ready. Scary.
We came so close to finishing! But that big bird in the middle was just too hard. One apple feather looked like another, like another, like another…
We left packing up the puzzle until it was almost time to leave. But eventually we put poor unfinished bird puzzle back in its box.
For a while the box sat on the linen dresser in our dining room. I thought about trying again but there are a lot of puzzles in this world, and I think someone else should have the pleasure of a lazy happy weekend with friends or family and big bird.
Eliza gets first crack at big bird and if she doesn’t want it, it’s going to Goodwill.
